From LEAP testing and Senior Signing Day to new enrichment partnerships, our students are showing growth and excellence in many areas. Southern University Laboratory School is proud to continue its partnership with the YMCA of the Capital Area for the second year, offering free swim lessons and water safety education to students in grades K–8. This initiative empowers nearly 200 students with essential life skills, promotes physical activity, and supports our commitment to student well-being and community health.

Our 1st grade class, led by Mrs. Rollins, took learning beyond the classroom with a fun and educational trip to the Global Wildlife Center in Folsom, Louisiana. Students explored the outdoors, fed exotic animals, and gained hands-on insight into wildlife and conservation. It was an unforgettable experience that brought science and nature to life!

Middle and High School students from Southern University Laboratory School recently competed in the McNeese State University SeaPerch Competition, demonstrating their skills in underwater robotics. With support from Brandi Brister of the LSU AgCenter, our SeaPerch team dove into STEM with enthusiasm and Jaguar excellence!

Southern University Laboratory School has partnered with the Southern University Tennis Team to introduce our Elementary students to the sport of tennis. This exciting collaboration promotes physical activity, skill-building, and mentorship by connecting young students with collegiate athletes who inspire on and off the court.

This National School Counseling Week, we proudly recognize the dedication of our guidance counselors—Mr. Karris Story, Mrs. Lasonia Brown, and Mrs. Shanta McCall. Their commitment to academic success, mental health, and student well-being is truly invaluable. During Omega Psi Phi Achievement Week, the Capitol City Ques (Beta Sigma, Lambda Alpha, Lambda Kappa Kappa, Delta Tau, and Theta Kappa) showed appreciation to our teachers by providing donuts and juice. Many members of Omega Psi Phi are proud SULS alumni, making this gesture even more special. Thank you, Capitol City Ques, for honoring our educators and supporting our school community!

Kameron Tillage, a senior at Southern University Laboratory School, was awarded the prestigious Silver Congressional Award by Congressman Garret Graves on October 1, 2024. This honor recognizes Kameron's dedication to personal development, leadership, and over 200 hours of community service, including meal distributions and initiatives for local senior homes. As Senior Class President and a member of Jack and Jill of America, Kameron has demonstrated remarkable leadership and academic achievement, maintaining a 3.5 GPA while balancing honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses. Congressman Graves praised Kameron for his commitment to making a difference in the community, highlighting his balanced approach to academics, extracurriculars, and service. Kameron views this award as motivation to continue his impactful work in Baton Rouge and beyond.

Due to the approaching Tropical Storm/Hurricane Francine, Southern University Laboratory School (SULS) will be closed on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12, 2024. All after-school activities for Tuesday, September 10, 2024, are also canceled. We plan to resume normal operations on Friday, September 13, 2024, pending any further weather developments. Parking and Traffic permit registration will continue at Pinchback Hall, Room 118, from September 9 to 13, 2024, between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Faculty, staff, and students must first register online before picking up permits, and payment can be made online or at the location. All vehicles parked on campus must display a valid parking permit, and violations will result in tickets, booting, or towing. Unregistered vehicles will be ticketed starting September 3, 2024, with additional penalties for parking in restricted areas during zone parking hours.

Due to ongoing construction on campus, the first day of school for grades Pre-K to 12 will be delayed to Monday, August 12, 2024. The additional days on Thursday, August 8, and Friday, August 9, will be used to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for our students. Parents can still drop off labeled supplies on these days. Emphasize the importance of starting the school year strong and remind them of our motto: we are the few, the proud, the Lab.

As leaders in the Baton Rouge area, we are dedicated to supporting the growth and education of aspiring entrepreneurs. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy of Baton Rouge (YEA BR, www.yeabr.org) is a national after-school program that transforms local high school students into confident entrepreneurs. Starting in the fall, this weekly program teaches students in grades 8-12 how to start and run their own businesses.

Instructors from the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business assist students in connecting their talents and interests to business opportunities, helping them identify business ideas even if they don't have one before applying. Throughout the academic year, students create business plans, file their companies with the Secretary of State's office, pitch their plans for seed funding, and launch their startups.
