Baton Rouge, LA: October 1, 2024—Southern University Laboratory School senior Kameron Tillage is no stranger to success, but on October 1, 2024, he reached a new milestone in his journey. At a special ceremony, Congressman Garret Graves honored Kameron with the prestigious Silver Congressional Award, recognizing his outstanding commitment to personal development, volunteerism, and leadership.
It was a moment that felt like the culmination of years of hard work for the young leader, who has long been a standout in both his school and community. As Senior Class President and Secretary of the Student Government Association, Kameron has been a driving force at Southern University Laboratory School. He uses his platform to advocate for his peers and is active in meaningful projects. But his leadership doesn’t stop at the school gates. Kameron is also an active member of the Baton Rouge Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, where he served as Sergeant at Arms and Immediate Past Vice President. His dedication to the organization’s mission led him to win the Teen Regional Conference Art Photography Contest and 2nd place in the Regional Teen Conference Humorous Monologue, showcasing his artistic talent.
Academically, Kameron has taken on the challenge of a rigorous course load, maintaining a 3.5 GPA while balancing a schedule packed with honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and Dual Enrollment classes. He also lettered in varsity football. Yet, his service to the community truly sets him apart. Kameron has dedicated over 200 volunteer hours, participating in initiatives that include meal distributions to older people, organizing Valentine’s Day card deliveries, and participating in drives to support local senior homes.
“It’s not just about the award,” Kameron shared. “For me, it’s about giving back to others and knowing that the small things can make a big impact.” This philosophy has shaped Kameron’s approach to service, driving him to participate in and lead efforts that spread joy and comfort those in need.
His dedication paid off with the Silver Congressional Award, a prestigious honor given by the U.S. Congress to recognize civilian youth for their community service and personal growth achievements. During the award ceremony, Congressman Graves spoke about Kameron’s contributions, praising his ability to balance academics, extracurriculars, and service with passion and poise.
