Applications will not be accepted unless all fields are completed in its entirety including all required documents. No applications will be accepted prior to the application period. All applications and required documents are due by 3:00 p.m. July 7th, for all applicants.
Requirements:
Student must be promoted to the next grade (fifth through twelfth grade ONLY) for the upcoming school year.
Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in core subjects (Math, Science, English, Social Studies) from the previous school year.
Earned at least “Mastery” or above in two tested areas on the last standardized test (LEAP).
(Reported as of application deadline)Must have a disciplinary record without any major disciplinary infractions as defined in the most recent student handbook prior to submitting the application (suspension/expulsion).
Students must maintain a clean disciplinary record for the 1st semester in order to maintain their award for the second semester.
All balances must be paid in full from the previous year. Foundation Fellowship Awards will be awarded on a provisional basis pending test scores.
Renewal Process:
The Foundation Fellowship Award is not guaranteed and is based on available funding. All awards are issued on a year to year (school year) basis. Students must reapply for the Foundation Fellowship Award by the deadline each year (school year). Students must maintain Fellowship requirements as listed above in order to receive second-semester funding.
Award Amount:
Tuition Only: $1,250.00 per semester
All school fees are the responsibility of the parent/guardian. School fees are to be paid by the established registration deadline. Failure to pay school fees by the registration deadline will result in revocation from Southern University Laboratory School. Families who receive a Foundation Fellowship Award will not be granted a deferment.
Volunteerism:
Families (Parents & Students) who receive a Foundation Fellowship Award are expected to volunteer a minimum of five hours per semester. Failure to fulfill or complete this requirement will result in a fine of $100. Failure to pay a fine will result in the loss of the award.

Summer reading is essential for students as it helps students maintain skills while school is out, and it also improves reading skills such as phonics, fluency, spelling, vocabulary,and comprehension. Recognition Program (EOY)
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten program will start at 9:00 am in the Joel Hawkins Gymnasium. Students will wear their cap and gown. Please bring your chrome books to turn in (with charger).
5th Grade
The 5th Grade program will start at 11:00 am. The boys will wear balck or blue pants with a white button down dress shirt. A tie or bow tie of their choice. The young ladies will wear a white or light solid colored dress (pastel colors). Please bring your chrome books to turn in. (with charger).
8th Grade
The 8th Grade program will start at 1:30 pm. Students will wear dress attire. Boys will wear shirts
and tie. If the young ladies wear a dress or skirt it needs to be at least 4 inches above the knee.

SULS Graduation
Graduation practice will be at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. It will run for about an hour and a half.
SULS will take place Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Felton G. Clark Activity Center. Students are expected to arrive at 4:45 pm. Handicap parking is available on the backside (Near the baseball complex) of the “mini dome.”
Attire
If you have not taken out your graduation gown and stole please do so. This will help with the wrinkles. Follow the directions in terms of steaming or ironing.
Ladies: you should wear a white or light-colored dress and black shoes.
Gentleman: a white or light-colored button-down shirt, dark-colored tie, black slacks, and black dress shoes (No tennis shoes). Please do not decorate your hat.

Youth Legislature
The Youth Legislature program is held in the fall, and engages participants at every level of state government. Students assume the roles in all three branches of government. Through the conference, they gain first hand knowledge of the democratic process through serving in either: the House, Senate, Executive and Judicial branches. Students will write bills on issues that are important to them with relevance to state issues.
Model United Nations
The Model United Nations program provides participants with an opportunity to gain insight into global relations. Through an experience of representing a country's viewpoint on global issues students will engage in writing resolutions through compromise and cooperation. Delegates represent a country and are assigned to one of the following councils: General Assembly, Economic & Social Council, or Security Council.

In preparation for the traffic flow, SUPD Traffic Division will route cars that enter Harding Blvd directly into the F.G. Clark Activity Center Parking Lot, not allowing vehicles to exit on Swan Ave.

Spring Fest is Friday, April 29, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Students will be participating in fun-filled activities before we start LEAP/AP testing. Students will be able to wear jeans (no holes, no joggers) and/or school pants along with their spring fest t-shirts and/or SULS t-shirt. Tennis shoes are allowed. Slippers and/or crocs are not allowed.

Embedded in the Legacy of Southern University Laboratory School are professionals that have made a lasting impact within their community, school, as well as their families. It is important that we place a premium on taking the necessary steps towards our next chapter; therefore, we are having an academic signing day on April 28, 2022. On this day, you will announce your intentions post graduation.
Tomorrow, Southern University Laboratory School will celebrate the next step for its seniors. We are asking students to bring the following:

Parents can start decorating their child’s table at 8:30 am. The school will provide a black table cloth for each table. Two students will be assigned to each table (see name card on table). After the table is decorated, parents and guests will sit in the audience. Graduating Seniors (who are participating) will report to the cafeteria at 9:20 am. School staff will line them up in alphabetical order.
Students are allowed to wear jeans with their School/College/Career shirt. It is preferred that students do not reveal their college/career choice until they announce their decision. For example, student “A” may wear a jacket over the college/career shirt until the announcement is made or put on the shirt at the time they reveal their choice. After the announcement is made, the student will proceed to their assigned table/seat.

Kelsie Tillage Earns National Congressional Award
Louisiana’s own, Kelsie Tillage, earned the honorable Gold Medal Congressional Award. This prestigious accolade, awarded by the US Congress, is the highest honor a youth civilian can achieve through the US Senate and House of Representatives. This program recognizes initiative, service, and achievement in youth ages 14-24.

Baton Rouge, LA - Louisiana’s own, Kelsie Tillage, earned the honorable Gold Medal Congressional Award. This prestigious accolade, awarded by the US Congress, is the highest honor a youth civilian can achieve through the US Senate and House of Representatives. This program recognizes initiative, service, and achievement in youth ages 14-24.
“Receiving this award is truly an honor,” said Tillage. “More importantly, I hope to inspire others to be more involved in their communities to elevate themselves and those around them.”
The Congressional Award was Established in 1979 by Congress as a public-private partnership. This program is the only non-profit organization affiliated with the US Congress. Since its inception, there have only been 5,000 gold medalists, and only 84 were from Louisiana. Kelsie Tillage is one of Louisiana’s first high school students to receive the gold medal award. The gold medal requires 400 hours of voluntary public service, 200 hours of personal development, 200 hours of physical fitness, and 5-day exploration.
Along with excelling in her academic pursuits, Kelsie is involved in several other volunteering ventures such as tutoring, reading and creating book logs for children, letter-writing campaigns, and providing digital content for non-profit organizations. Kelsie furthered her personal development and physical fitness by participating in several extracurricular activities. Such as Varsity and Club Volleyball, Youth & Government, SULS Student Government Association where she served as Secretary and Vice President, and Level 3 Photography in Futures Fund. Lastly, during Kelsie’s exploration of South Africa, she deciphered dialects of different languages.
Kelsie Tillage is a junior at Southern University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In addition to maintaining a 4.29-grade point average, she is dually enrolled at Southern University, Honors and AP courses, is a published author, and is a Regional Teen Officer for Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated (a non-profit service organization). Kelsie has also been dubbed student of the year in her district and earned the Duke Tip Scholar, John Hopkins CTY, and the Jacqueline Moore Bowles Leadership Awards.
“I hope that receiving this award allows me to broaden my reach in my endeavors to create and explore,” said Tillage. After being published in an anthology, Kelsie Tillage is inspired to create her own, “Unpopular Opinions,” set to release in Summer 2022. “I realized many people have vast opinions and stories that they want to share.” Stay up to date on Kelsie’s journey on kelsieania.com.

TALKING TO TEENS: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND COMMUNICATION - APRIL 26 @ 6PM
This session focuses on identifying and discussing aspects of healthy and unhealthy relationships; and distinguishing the difference between the three different communication styles. Parents and caregivers who attend this session will also receive strategies and resources to effectively communicate with their teens.
ANSWERING SENSITIVE QUESTIONS RELATED TO SEXUAL HEALTH - MAY 31 @ 6PM
This session will provide an overview of the most common STIs, including their mode of transmission, symptoms, and treatment. Parents and caregivers who attend this session will role play various sentence starters and discuss strategies to having meaningful conversations with teens about sex and STIs.
TEENS, SEX, AND THE LAW - JUNE 28 @ 6PM
This session focuses on consent and identifying key laws in Louisiana regarding teen sexual activity. Parents and caregivers who attend this session will receive tools and resources to support discussions around consent with their teens.
Angelo Izzard Wins WAFB Warrick Dunn Award
Congratulations to Angelo Izzard Jr. He is the 2022 winner of the WAFB Warrick Dunn Award. This award is awarded to one of the top players in the State of Louisiana. “AJ” received Sportsline Player of the Week two times during the 2022 school year.

He continued to torch secondaries in the playoffs, leading Southern Lab to 42 points per game in four victories. HBCU Scholarships were established to assist graduating seniors residing in East or West Baton Rouge and obtaining a college degree from Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical University.

27th Annual Outstanding Volunteer program for 2022 (11th Grade)
The Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation is pleased to announce our 27th Annual Outstanding Volunteer program for 2022. Every high school in the Greater Baton Rouge area may select a member of the junior class who has given time and talent as a volunteer in school, religious organizations, and community activities.

Each Outstanding Volunteer will receive a cash award in the amount of $500. In addition, ten (10) Outstanding Volunteers will receive an additional $500 (total of $1,000), and two participants (one male and one female) will receive a total of $2,500 each in recognition of their exceptional contributions to their communities.
The deadline for receipt of all student forms and materials is Monday, April 25,. The cash awards along with certificates of honor will be presented to these outstanding students at a reception to be held on Sunday afternoon, May 15. The location of that event is pending.

LHSAA Hall of Fame: Rebecca Marshall
On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Coach Rebecca Marshall joined Larney Owens, Carl Porter, Joel Hawkins, and Marcus Spears as she was inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Coach Rebecca Marshall joined Larney Owens, Carl Porter, Joel Hawkins, and Marcus Spears as she was inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Coach Marshall has fostered a distinguished legacy at Southern University Laboratory School since she became the girls track coach in 1990. At the district, regional, and state levels, the track and field program dominated. Under her direction, the Kittens developed a distinguished athletic tradition in the sports of outdoor track and field, indoor track and field, and cross country. She has a long history of producing track stars who have ranked among the top athletes in the state of Louisiana.
Many of her students have moved on to become outstanding athletes at the collegiate level as a result of her leadership. Coach Marshall and her cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams won 16 consecutive championships, 21 total. Southern Lab won the 1990 Outdoor Championship, the Outdoor Championships from 1993-2008, the 1993 and 1994 Cross Country Championships, and the 1993 and 1996 Indoor Championships. Marshall was also awarded with the 1995 State Girls Track Coach of the Year.
Ms.Marshall retired from SULS in 2021 and is 1st ballot Hall of Famer.

Our Spring Fest is Thursday, April 14 and starts at 12pm. Elementary school is having an Easter egg hunt at 10am, sponsored by our SGA.

Steps in the Election Process
The elections of SGA officers, Miss Southern High and her court (9th – 12th grade attendants) will take place during the Spring Semester.
State of SGA officers and qualifications:
(GPA’s are cumulative for ALL officers; GPA’s are determined at the end of the 1st Semester as certified by the student's official transcript)
President (senior 3.0 GPA)
Vice President (Senior or Junior, 3.0 GPA)
Corresponding Secretary (Any level, 3.0 GPA)
Recording Secretary (Any Level, 3.0 GPA)
Parliamentarian (Any level, 3.0 GPA)
Chaplain (Any level, 3.0 GPA)
In addition to the above qualifications, as defined here, those running for office must have a clear record regarding major disciplinary infractions that is outlined in the student handbook, be dependable and honest, have the ability to work with others, and perform well the duties required of the specific office.
Qualifications for Miss Southern High
Must be a senior with at least a 3.0 cumulative average certified by student transcript as of the current Fall semester.
Must have a clear record (grades 9 – 12) regarding major disciplinary infractions that is outlined in the student handbook the same year of the election
Must have charm, poise and grace
Must have been a student of the Lab School from 9th – 12th grade, uninterrupted. (Must be a student for the full school year, August to May)
Must agree to be guided by a faculty committee in the selection of attire and public appearances/speeches
Must not incur any disciplinary actions to maintain title. Otherwise, the title will be forfeited.
Must be current in all fees. (Class fee and registration)

Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship
Each year, Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., offers an $8,000, four-year scholarship to a graduating female student in East Baton Rouge Parish public/charter school system, Southern University Laboratory School, and Central School System planning to attend Southern University-Baton Rouge campus.
Each year, Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., offers an $8,000, four-year scholarship to a graduating female student in East Baton Rouge Parish public/charter school system, Southern University Laboratory School, and Central School System planning to attend Southern University-Baton Rouge campus. An informational flyer (for posting), and the application packet are enclosed to be shared with eligible female students. Forms may be duplicated as needed. Exposure To Medicine will be an opportunity for 50 high school students who are interested in a career in medicine to learn about important steps they can take to prepare themselves for their future and get exposure to the medical field. ETM includes an overview of the path to medicine, hands-on experiences, Q&A time with practicing physicians and information on premedical opportunities.
Interested students can submit a registration request via this LINK or by searching "Exposure To Medicine" on the Eventbrite website. Up to 10 student registrations per school will be confirmed for attendance. We request that each student attend alongside a parent / guardian because a lot of important information will be shared. Academic Signing Day is an avenue to highlight the educational achievements of our Seniors. The event would mirror traditional athletic signing day, but the focus is on merit, academic, and other achievements.

SULS Beta Clubs Supports Runners for The Annual Red River 5K
On Saturday, March 28, 2021 Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta inc.hosted Redz River Run 5k Race. The race benefited several local charities including March of Dimes, Baton Rouge AIDS Society, It Takes A Village BR, The Butterfly Society, and the Southern Lab School.
We would like to thank the SULS Sr. Beta Club and Cheerleaders for their support of this community event. The students cheered for participants on the route and assisted around the school.
Camp S.W.A.G.
Southern University Laboratory School is excited to announce that we will be hosting our summer enrichment program again this summer. S.W.Ag.-STEM, writing and agriculture. Students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade can participate in academically enriched activities that are fun and engaging, STEM hands-on activities, argumentative writing, agriculture and physical education. SULS Summer Enrichment - Bridging the Gap
Southern University Laboratory school is pleased to announce our summer program for students in grades 6th through 12th. In order to maximize the opportunity to polish and strengthen skills in math and ELA while having fun through interactive, hands-on activities, and games, we are offering a summer program for our students. This will also give us an opportunity to continue to fill in gaps academically that may have occurred due to COVID-19 and its effects on learning. The first part of the day will be academic enrichment with SULS staff, and the second part of the day will include STEM activities in engineering and/or science provided by the College of Science and Engineering (COSE).
Summer hours will be from 8:00 to 3:00, Monday through Thursday beginning June 1 to July 1. The camp will be $200 for SULS students ($300 outside families) which will cover the cost of the camp plus 2 t-shirts. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Fridays will be field trip days. The Virtual Beginning Agricultural Youth Opportunities Unlimited Program provides an opportunity for high school students to gain “first hand” knowledge about career opportunities in Agriculture, Family and Consumer science and related disciplines.
The program will be delivered virtually as we continue to fight our way through the COVID-19 Pandemic. Selected students will be required to be online from 9am to 12pm each day for the duration of the program. For more information please send an email to bayou@suagcenter.com.

The Beginning Agricultural Youth Opportunities Unlimited (BAYOU) Program provides an opportunity for high school students to gain “first hand” knowledge about career opportunities in Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences and related disciplines. The Ag-Xperience program provides students hands-on experience with the different areas of their choosing. Selected students will be required to attend daily face to face from 8am to 5pm each day for the duration of the program. Lunch will be provided. SULS Students Participates in Episcopal Case Study & College Fair
On Sunday, March 27th, 2022 Southern University Laboratory School partnered with Episcopal School of BR, Ascension Episcopal School, East Baton Rouge Parish School System, The Baton Rouge Youth Coalition, and Cristo Rey to host the annual Episcopal Case Studies and College Fair at Episcopal High School. Over 62 colleges from across the United States were in attendance. During the case studies, college representatives will lead small groups through three full college admissions applications with essays. Through discussion and the mock process, representatives will identify who is waitlisted, accepted, and denied and provide feedback. This was a valuable experience to students who wanted to gain insight into the process of college acceptance and understanding the admissions process.
Girls Design For Good Engineering Challenge Event
Girls Design For Good is a state-wide project of Million Women Mentors-LA in collaboration with Capital Area STEM Network Center @ the LSU Cain Center and the LSU College of Engineering's Society of Peer Mentors' student group that aims to involve young women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Boyz 2 Men Virtual Summit
On Saturday, April 9, 2022, Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host a virtual “Boyz 2 Men Summit.” The summit will start at 11:00 A.M. and end at 12:30 P.M. This summit will focus on young men ages 11-13 and 14-18, and will feature two breakout sessions, a keynote speaker, and door prizes. Click Here to Register
Information provided by numerous agencies indicates that the plight of the African-American male is determined almost from birth. Data also suggest that the vast majority of this group of young men continue to be in crisis and, consequentially, are not reaching their fullest potential educationally, socially, and emotionally. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, in recognizing a critical need to address the possible loss of potential greatness, designed a program to specifically address this need. “Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence” (EMBODI) program, has been specifically designed to address these issues by focusing on STEM education, culture, self-efficacy, leadership, physical and mental health, healthy lifestyle choices, character, ethics, relationships, college readiness, fiscal management, civic engagement and service learning.

Spring Fest: Easter Egg Hunt
The SGA will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt for all elementary students in grades PreK through 5th grade during the Spring Fest. To help make this be a success, we are asking parents to donate individually wrapped candy and plastic easter eggs. Please drop off all donations in the front office.
