Attention 11th Grade Teachers:
The DEMCO essay contest is underway! Entries accepted Nov. 1, 2021 through Jan. 21, 2022.
Each year since 1978, this contest has been our method to identify four 11th grade students from our service area to participate as DEMCO delegates at the National Rural Electric Youth Tour, in Washington, D.C. Students are invited to submit an essay in the form of a letter addressed to a political leader, on a topic of concern and importance to the student author. Contest rules are posted at www.DEMCO.org/Community. DEMCO receives hundreds of essays each year. Twelve semi-finalists are chosen to give an oral presentation of their essay at a banquet in March, and four winners are selected and announced on that evening.
The contest has been a great success for many years. Students from Louisiana and other state delegations across America attend Youth Tour to learn about electric cooperatives, American history, and U.S. government. The trip is fun but also very educational. A highlight of the trip is when our delegation meets with their representatives in the House and Senate.
Please note that only children of DEMCO members are eligible for the trip to Washington, D.C.; however, all students who enter the contest are eligible for prizes to be awarded for the best-written essays. For contest rules and to enter online, visit www.DEMCO.org/community/demco-essay-contest. All entries are due by Friday, January 21, 2022.

What is P-EBT?
The Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) Program was created in Spring 2020 to provide funds for families to buy food while schools were closed due to COVID-19.
· Eligible students in HYBRID learning situations can expect to receive $48.23 for each eligible month. “Hybrid” means a combination of computer-based and in-person learning.
· Eligible students in FULLY VIRTUAL learning situations can expect to receive $120.71 for each eligible month. “Fully virtual” means taking classes by computer.
When can I expect to receive P-EBT benefits?
P-EBT benefits have been issued for August 2020 to May 2021 for students whose schools reported them as eligible. Have you checked the P-EBT Parent Portal? The Portal contains information about your child’s P-EBT case, including the months for which benefits were issued. You can view the Parent Portal by visiting http://dcfs.la.gov/page/pebt-parent-portal. If you want to report an error, please email us at info@sulabschool.com.
Why haven’t I received a P-EBT deposit for certain months and/or for summer?
Have you checked the P-EBT Parent Portal? The Portal contains information about your child’s P-EBT case, including the months for which benefits were issued. You can view the Parent Portal by visiting http://dcfs.la.gov/page/pebt-parent-portal. If you want to report an error, please email us at info@sulabschool.com.
The Summer P-EBT program only recently received federal approval. We’re submitting information to DCFS for students who were in-person in May, and you can expect benefits to be issued onto existing P-EBT cards between late August and October.
My child attended school in person in the 2020-21 school year, so we didn’t receive a P-EBT card yet. Will we receive Summer P-EBT?
As schools submit information about students who were enrolled in May AND received free meals, DCFS will issue benefits to those students and order cards to be mailed to those students in their names. They are expected to be received by October.
I haven’t received my child’s P-EBT card yet. Why?
Have you checked the P-EBT Parent Portal? The Portal contains information about your child’s P-EBT case, including the months for which benefits were issued. You can view the Parent Portal by visiting http://dcfs.la.gov/page/pebt-parent-portal.
I’ve checked the Portal and the information that was submitted is not correct. My child didn’t receive benefits for all the months he or she was eligible for.
We (the school) can review your child’s attendance records in the Student Information System to determine if a correction is warranted. If so, we’ll submit the information to the P-EBT system. This type of update is processed each week and processing could take a few weeks to complete, depending on when the change is submitted and whether there are any other issues. Updates appear in the Parent Portal on Wednesdays.
You’ll find more information about corrections on the P-EBT website at http://www.dcfs.louisiana.gov/page/pebt-louisiana-faqs#corrections
I’ve checked the Parent Portal and my child has been listed as hybrid for months they were virtual.
We (the school) can review your child’s attendance records in the Student Information System to determine if a correction is warranted. If so, we’ll submit the information to the P-EBT system. DCFS will begin processing these types of updates in mid-August and they’ll begin to appear in the Parent Portal then. Once the update is made, the extra benefits will be made available on cards shortly thereafter.
I’ve checked the Portal and I don’t have an issuance for summer. Why?
To be eligible for summer benefits, students had to be in school in May and on free or reduced-price lunch. Summer benefits have already been issued to students that were hybrid or virtual in May, because it was known those students attended school in May. We’re submitting information to DCFS for students who were in-person in May, and you can expect benefits to be issued onto existing P-EBT cards between late August and October.
I need to update the address that my child’s P-EBT card was sent to.
Have you filled out the [form]? That’ll help us get started on [school/school districts] process to change your address in the system. Once we’ve verified the change of address and submitted the change, it will take a few weeks for the update to appear in the Parent Portal. A replacement card may take up to 30 days to arrive by mail after it appears in the Portal.
I haven’t received my P-EBT card yet.
Check the Parent Portal to see if benefits have been issued and if your address is correct. You can expect to receive a card within 30 days of the issuance date.
If you are having another issue with your card, the DCFS LAHelp-U Customer Contact Center should be able to assist. Try calling 1-888-524-3578 or emailing LAHelpU.DCFS@la.gov. You can call LAHelpU from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., M-F, except on holidays. To activate your PEBT Card with the automated system, select your language, then 4 and then 1. If you're having problems activating your card or creating a CAFÉ account to log into the PEBT Parent Portal, you can select 4 and then 2 to have a Customer Service Representative assist you.
Tip: Call volumes are lightest between 7:30-8:30 am & 5-6 pm. (Monday and Tuesday are the busiest days.)

As we start the 21-22SY we are implementing new strategies to start the learning recovery process. Please understand, LEAP 2025, ACT standards, and graduation requirements have not changed, and we must continue to prepare for the passing of the standardized assessments.
In closing, the new school year is quickly approaching, so we wanted to provide you with important information relative to SULS. The first day of school is Monday, August 9, 2021. Southern University Laboratory School is a tuition-based school, and in order to operate properly and effectively, we must have sufficient funds in place. As we continue to maximize the learning opportunity for our students, it is imperative that families not only fulfill their financial obligations, but also pay them in a timely manner.
Beginning the 2021-2022 school year, students must be current in their tuition and fees prior to the start of school. In order to receive a schedule and/or attend class, your child must be registered following the prescribed financial guidelines outlined by the institution. Parents who choose the deferment option must pay at least the required 50% and meet the stated deadlines for continuous payments. Students who are awarded the Foundation Fellowship Award or students who qualify for tuition-exemption are required to pay fees in full. Additionally, parents who choose to pay tuition in full, must fulfill that obligation prior to the start of school.
Registrations Policies
SULS/SU Tuition Exemption Students
Parents must submit all completed forms with approval by August 1, 2021, for an exemption to be applied. The exemption will not be applied without approval signatures. Once the exemption is applied, payment must be received prior to the first day of school. The application is located on the SULS app under documents and you can also obtain a copy from the Front Office.
Payroll Deduction
Payroll deduction forms are available on the SUBR website under Human Resources. Parents who use payroll deduction must submit documentation with proof of the payroll deduction approval. This documentation must be submitted prior to the first day of school to be considered registered (paid).
Foundation Fellowship Award Recipients
Parents must pay prior to the first day of school. These families are not allowed to apply for a deferment.
Deferment Policies
Deferments allow families to make partial payments for each semester.
Parents will be required to make a payment of 50% of the total amount for the semester prior to the start of school. The remaining balance will be divided into three equal payments.
In order to qualify for deferment, the student account must have a zero balance from the previous school year. If the deferment application is denied, full payment is required prior to the first day of school.
All Fall semester tuition and fees must be received by October 31, 2021, and Spring semester tuition and fees must be received by March 31.
If either of the preceding dates falls on the weekend, payments are due the next business day. Students who fail to meet their financial obligation prior to the preceding date(s) will be dismissed from class.
Failure to meet payment deadlines will result in denial of the option to defer payments for one calendar school year. Deferment applications are available on the first day of Registration.
Families who receive a Foundation Fellowship Award will not be granted a deferment.
Finally, failure to rectify and/or fulfill your financial obligations will result in your child/children not being able to re-enroll or register at Southern University Laboratory School in the future.
